Hug it Forward and Pay it Forward

Empowering children

‘Hug it Forward’ are a non profit organisation who are Paying it Forward with Education!

They empower communities in Guatemala to build schools out of rubbish.

These Bottle Schools illustrate what can happen when a community come together and collaborates. They epitomise the phrase ‘one man’s rubbish is another man’s gold’, utilising what they have around them and creating something very magical.

Hug it Forward

Children in the village collect empty plastic bottles, then they fill them with non – degradable rubbish. The plastic bottles are collected then stacked up and then covered with cement. They are used as insulation for the walls of the school building. It is eco friendly and it means that there is a lot less rubbish on the streets!

It takes the phrase reduce, reuse and recycle to a whole new level.

How can you work with others to help create a better world?

Small things can make a big difference to people. Taking time to listen to someone’s story, sharing a skill or developing an innovative idea, it doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you love doing it!

Please feel free to share any ideas, stories or inspirational projects here.

  2. Hi Tanya!

Thank for your blog post about bottle schools! I am also from the UK :) Although I’m now living in Guatemala volunteering full-time with Hug It Forward….

I was wondering if you’d like to come to Guatemala and help build a bottle school? And maybe bring a group of people from England?? We offer one-week voluntourism trips in conjunction with our partner organization Serve The World Today. Check out their web site for more info about the trips!

    Have a wonderful day!
